Why celebrate birthdays?

I grew up in a small town where I see some of my neighbors celebrate their birthdays, or their parents' birthdays or their grandparents' birthdays or their children's birthdays. Sometimes I get invited to come.  Often, they just send us our share of the food had we come.  Sometimes, I did not know if we were invited or not and I did not care.

I had a few birthday celebrations when I was young but it was my parents' celebrating for me.  I would wake up early in the day and they would bring me to church to thank God and then my mother would cook rice noodles or rice cakes and that would be my simple birthday.  When I grew up I was not keen on celebrating birthdays.  I just thanked God for another year added to my life and that is it. Of course, when my friends invited me to their birthdays and then they would ask me when they will eat on my account because it is my birthday, I accomodate them and spend money for my birthday. Because some friends give me birthday cards, I also buy and give them birthday cards.

Otherwise, in a place where nobody knows my birthday or cares about my birthday, the day just pass by with me simply thanking the Lord for the kindness, protection and life given to me. Am I unusual or you share the same feeling or thinking?

Is a birthday celebration just treating people for a free lunch? Or giving gifts to the celebrator?  That was the question I wanted to find the proper or better answer.  I wanted to find a reason for whatever I do.  I did not want to live in purposeless motions.

Have you asked yourself the same question?

Have you found a satisfactory answer?

Please share your own answer to mine.  I will greatly appreciate them.
